Ginseng: Why I love it and How I use It

Ginseng has long been revered as one of the great adaptogenic herbs — a plant that helps the body adapt to stress, restore vitality, and maintain balance. Its use stretches back thousands of years, especially within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurvedic practices , where it is often described as a tonic for life force itself. I get mine from HAPPY HERB online, only because I love the company and quality of their products. In TCM Ginseng is classified as a Chi tonic — a herb that strengthens and replenishes the body’s vital energy. It is often prescribed for fatigue, weakness, poor appetite, or recovery after illness. Within TCM, Ginseng replenishes both Yin and Yang , but is most famous for boosting Yang Qi , the warming, activating energy that fuels resilience and stamina. It supports the Spleen (digestion and assimilation), Lung (breath and vitality), and Heart (spirit and clarity). For many, it is seen as the perfect coffee replacement — offering energy without overstimulating the system. In Ayurveda In India, Ginseng became associated with herbs such as Ashwagandha (often called “Indian Ginseng” for its similar adaptogenic effects). Both are seen as Rasayanas — rejuvenating herbs that restore strength, support reproductive energy, and calm the nervous system. Ginseng’s warming, stimulating quality is said to increase Ojas (vital essence), heightening mental clarity and physical vitality. Interaction with the Womb & Uterus Across both traditions, Ginseng is recognised for its ability to nourish reproductive energy: In TCM, it supports Kidney Jing (essence) and Spleen Qi , both foundational for healthy menstrual cycles, fertility, and postnatal recovery. It is often included in formulas for women who feel depleted after childbirth or who experience irregular or weak cycles due to fatigue or stress. In clinic, I may mention it as a supportive herb for women whose hormonal cycles leave them feeling exhausted or depleted. In Ayurveda, its Rasayana quality is linked to rejuvenating the reproductive tissues ( Shukra Dhatu ), balancing energy during hormonal changes, and supporting vitality in women. Modern research also suggests that Ginseng may influence blood flow and hormone balance, helping regulate uterine function, ease fatigue associated with menstrual cycles, and support libido. Why It Shows Up in Wellbeing Ginseng tends to emerge when the body or spirit is overstretched. It often appears as support in times of: Burnout, fatigue, or overwork A need for sharper focus, memory, or mental clarity Recovery from illness, surgery, childbirth, or emotional depletion Supporting vitality through ageing, hormonal changes, and major life transitions The Essence of Ginseng At its core, Ginseng is a reminder that life energy can be cultivated and replenished. It doesn’t override the body — it gently awakens its capacity to adapt, balance, and return to its natural rhythm. How I Personally Use Ginseng as a 40-Year-Old Working Mother For me, Ginseng has become one of those quiet supports I can lean on when life is full. A few of the ways I use it: Long drives to Sydney – I find it perfect for staying alert on the highway without the highs and lows of coffee or chocolate. Sport or the gym – When I need to pull myself together and get moving in the afternoon, it gives me the steady energy to show up fully. As a Projector – Ginseng feels like the energy I’m often missing. I can carry it around in a bottle and sip when I need a lift. Socialising after 9pm (mum life!) – A little Ginseng before heading out the door gives me the warmth and stamina to enjoy myself without reaching for that second wine or margarita.
